Divorce is stressful. In fact, according to the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS), it is the second most stressful life event, with only ‘death of a spouse/child’ beating it to the No.1 spot. Interestingly, ‘marriage’ sits at No.7!

This said, many couples are choosing to separate, and are finding more fulfilling, happier lives as a result. Yet, there is no doubt that the separation period, the years prior and the adjustment process is challenging. Divorce, especially when children are involved, often comes with a formidable blend of practical, financial and emotional issues, which has it ranking so high in the aforementioned scale.

It is during this time that people reach for simple support which can be incorporated in daily living to make life more manageable and help them through separation. One of the very best ways to do this is with mantras. Best of all, they are completely free and take up very little of your time.

MANTRAS TO HELP YOU THROUGH DIVORCE

The word mantra comes from Hinduism and Buddhism and means ‘a statements or slogan repeated frequently’. Mantras are used aid concentration in meditation and yoga, but work just as well as a standalone tool which even the busiest person can find time for. Another way to think of a mantra is as a daily reminder to shift your mindset allowing you to focus on the good parts of life and the journey you are on.

HOW TO USE MANTRAS

Mantras can be recited mentally throughout the day, but are particularly helpful when you need to distract yourself from a stressful or difficult situation. A mantra may be a couple of words or a sentence, but when repeated several times will take only 1-2 minutes. Repeating a mantra before getting out of bed in the morning can make a difference to your day. Repeating them in the evening will help you feel calm and grounded after the day’s events. Mantras create positive thoughts, which in-turn, create a positive energy. The more often you recite your personal mantra, the more effective it will be at helping you through your divorce.

Of course, life is busy and you may worry that you’ll forget to recite your mantras. To prevent this happening, write your mantra on some sticky notes and place them strategically to prompt you i.e. the bathroom mirror, the fridge door and/or the steering wheel of your car. Once you know your mantras, you can swap to simple stickers in these places as a gentle reminder. When you are in a routine with your mantras, you won’t need reminding, you will use them naturally.

Reciting mantras as part of your everyday life can also be incorporated with tapping. Tapping is combination of Ancient Chinese Acupressure and Modern Psychology. It consists of tapping with your fingertips on specific meridian points whilst saying your mantra. Tapping can be done almost anywhere. Think of it as a way to boost the power of your mantras.

CHOOSING A MANTRA

Mantras are very personal. They can be whatever words you choose to use. Ideally, wording that resonates with your life at this particular time will help you through your separation. You can have different mantras for different times of the day. Use your intuition to choose a mantra that works for you. Something empowering and encouraging for the morning and throughout the day, then perhaps something peaceful and rewarding for the evening. A mantra should be easy to remember, comfortable to say and relevant to your time and place in the world at that moment.
